DIABETIC ALERT AND RESPONSE TRAINING News! Nina is training dogs to alert and respond to medical emergencies such as Low Blood Sugar in Diabetics. The charity is in the process of being registered, and will be known as
K9 Paramedix ELSI now aged 3
"Elsi was 3 last Thursday, & still flourishing. I thought you'd like to hear how clever she was at the w/e. We'd been out mountain biking, & I was outside cleaning the bike, feeling fine & dandy. I heard Elsi growling at Mot, so I went inside to see what was going on. She was hovering by the JB bag. I was surprised, as I felt 100%, but to give her the benefit of the doubt, I went upstairs to do a test. As the reading came up on the screen ....2.2!!!...., Elsi ran upstairs with the JB bag & pawed at my leg!! She knew well before I did that I was at risk!!
What a wonderful friend."

Nina is currently training dogs of private clients with Diabetes. Using the Homing Signals technique that she developed, NIna has started teaching puppies to detect samples of low blood sugar levels. Once the puppy detects these samples from amongst normal samples, the puppy is trained to offer a strong indication that will interrupt the person if they are active, or wake them if they are asleep. Once the person responds to the indication, the puppy brings an Emergency Resource such as a sugar source and ensures that the person takes it. We welcome financial support for further development of this potentially life-saving work.Quote from family of dogs trained by Nina to alert and respond to Diabetic changes -
"Forgot to tell you about an interesting offshoot of
the alert training.
!You have made such a change to ( ) life, and also to Stans as he is now understood and knows how to get his point across properly. When the consultant said that ( ) must keep on using Stanley as he has brought her HBA1C levels down to the lowest for several years, the pride was immense. And also the gratitude to you- thank you is not enough...

Exciting news ! Last evening, I arrived home late after a race, & sat for a while
in my armchair, with Elsi asleep on the floor beside me. I felt very
tired, & sleepy, & after a while (too long), I decided to do a
blood test, which involved getting up & going to my rucksack, the
other side of the room from Elsi.
My blood test was less than 1.4. i.e. 'about to go unconscious' level,
& very quickly, I felt faint, started to sweat profusely, & was
pretty much rendered incapable of helping myself. I was vaguely aware
that Elsi was the opposite side of the room from me, & seemingly
asleep, so I was starting to panic, as I didn't know if I was capable
of getting up to fetch the JBs.
However all of a sudden, she ran over to me, put her chin on my knee,
growled furiously at [the older dog] , then shot into the kitchen. grabbed the JB
bag, yanked it off the velcro, & plonked it into my hands!!!!! I
was SO proud of her, & so relieved. Once I'd eaten enough JBs, I
took her to the kitchen to give her the biggest treat of her life.
I hope you'll be pleased with her - I certainly am!!
Emergency Response - six months old February 2010 - all grown up and wearing her ID jacket!
I delivered my address last night 'Living with diabetes - at work & at play'. I finished it with a demo. of Elsi rescuing me from a mock hypo. I put a hypo-sweaty T-shirt on over my clothes, & set down quietly. She had been lying still under a chair next to my rucksack throughout the talk (approx 3/4 hr). She immediately got up & came over to me, whining. She then went to look for the Jelly Babies (my emergency sugar source). She sensibly went firstly to the table where I'd been standing for my address, & searched behind it & under it, then went back to 'her' chair & looked on it, under it, & in the rucksack(!!!), then just went along the front row of seats, which I'd purposely asked to be kept empty, & she found the JBs on the middle seat. She brought them to me, barking & prodding me, & handed them to me gently! Everyone was amazed, & 2 ladies had tears running down their cheeks. I'd explained that I was expecting a lot of her in a strange, large room, full of people, & where she would have had no idea of the whereabouts of the JBs. My friend Netti didn't think I should risk it, in case it all went horribly wrong, & Elsi lost her confidence. I'd already done a laptop presentation of her 'in action' but I thought the real thing would be so much better, & she didn't let me down. I love her so much. February 2010

Specialising in the education of both dogs and people, Nina's approach is based upon scientific principles of positive reinforcement and learning theory, coupled with nearly 30 years of practical dog and other animal training. Experiments have shown that humans have greater difficulty in changing behaviour than animals! Nina’s courses are designed to gently cultivate an interest in the new knowledge currently being uncovered, as well as reinforce existing sound practice in participants.
Nina's practical hands-on sessions follow clear exposition of theory. Training courses and seminars (See "Events" page) available world-wide, include the following topics: Operational police and service dogs.Understanding and using Operant Conditioning and Homing Signals; Clicker Training Chickens, Pigs, Sheep, Goats and Horses; Puppy Education and Development; Puppy Assessment – for specific purpose roles (security, SAR, SchH , Assistance etc); Introduction to Assistance Dog training; Developing a Practical Training Plan; New techniques for training and handling difficult or dangerous dogs and horses: Conditioning zoo animals for optimum management and visitor impact:
Quotes from clients: “Your seminar was one of the most interesting I have ever attended” “Valuable, entertaining and fascinating” “Thought-provoking yet completely practical” “Really clarified the theory as well as the practise” “Very helpful, and professionally presented” “A young Konrad Lorenz” - John Fisher “Among the best trainers in the world” – Dr Ian Dunbar.
As the author and illustrator of "Hearts, Minds and Paws" - a lavishly illustrated book on working dogs with unusual jobs - from Seizure Response, Explosive and Drug detection, Crime Scene Investigation Forensic Fido, to Assistance Dog Training, Nina explores the human-animal bond. She is fascinated by animal communication and the ways in which dogs are able to adapt to working cooperatively with people, in this book There are sections on Breed types and Puppy Assessment, Selection and Training, and some of the extraordinary stories of people who have a Canine Partner registered Assistance dog, including two dogs trained by Nina that have been awarded the Dicken Medal for Devotion to Duty. "Hearts, Minds and Paws" can be ordered from www.caninepartners.co.uk and each copy sold raises money to support the work of Canine Partners. Publications.

TRAINER ASSESSMENT AND ACCREDITATION
As a member of the Committees for Trainer Assessment Standards, for the Assistance Dogs International, Assistance Dogs Europe and Assistance Dogs UK, as well as the IAABC (International Association of Animal Behaviour Consultants) Accreditation Committee, Nina develops trainer evaluation and certification programmes. She also specialises in the assessment and selection of puppies and dogs for specific purpose work.
Canine Partners Endal had a truly remarkable career as assistance dog and PR role model for the good name of dogs everywhere. Allen Parton and Endal together were a partnership that transcended boundaries of Assistance Dog Charities, and expectations of what dogs and people can achieve. Allen tirelessly campaigned on behalf of dogs everywhere to counter negative publicity, and they achieved international stardom and recognition - the book about this partnership "Endal", by Sandra and Allen Parton is now available from HarperTrue.com. They have their own chapter in my book "Hearts, Minds and Paws".
I have wonderful memories of assessing and selecting tiny little Endal for his future career as a Canine Partner. He was a sensitive and gentle little soul and learned how to solve problems and work pro-actively with enthusiasm. The partnership with Allen was obvious from the moment they met. Like any great partnership, they brought out the best in each other. I was very proud to certify Endal and then graduate the partnership. Together they pioneered the Behaviour Shaping and Problem-Solving approach to assistance dog training and skills development, and many of the tasks we take for granted in assistance dogs, were first seen with Allen and Endal. I am very proud to have helped make it possible for those two to achieve so much.
